Win It Wednesday: Cooking Pocket Guides

Drum Roll, Please!!!
Our Winner is Carmen Nuland!
Happy Win It Wednesday! Our Leisure Arts Food Editor, Celia Harkey, is guest blogging today about our four new cooking pocket guides, and she’s got a copy of each to give away! Read on to find out how you could be a winner in our Win It Wednesday Giveaway!
Have you looked at your calendar? The holidays are quickly approaching, and Leisure Arts has the recipes you need for delicious entertaining! Four newly published, laminated food guides: Candy, Cookies, Cupcakes, and Cooking Basics — each one folds out accordion-style into 12 pages. Check it out:

I guess you could call these food guides the 4 Cs of recipes for all cooks: the experienced cook, the pretty confident cook, the beginning cook, and the wannabe-cook. And are they handy? Yes! Each guide is approximately 8-1/2 inches tall x 4-1/2 inches wide — the perfect size to take in your purse when you go grocery shopping.
In fact, I am so excited about these easy-to-keep-clean laminated recipes because I know you will want them for yourself AND to give as gifts. Cooking Basics is a reference full of useful kitchen tips and information and, since each page is laminated, there’ll be no stains on your recipes! Keep it tucked close by in your kitchen drawer — I promise this will be your “go-to” resource for measuring, cooking terms, substitutions, food storage, and even basic everyday recipes. Cooking Basics makes a great gift, especially in addition to those “can’t cook without them” measuring cups and spoons for a new bride!
Now for those holidays that make me so eager to start gathering my ingredients! The Candy laminated guide includes a helpful feature on “Using a Candy Thermometer.” This will boost every cook’s confidence for making candy that requires a more precise test for the best results. For Halloween, I have already decided to make the Microwave Peanut Brittle and the Strawberry Divinity recipes. Everyone loves peanut brittle, so I’ll have a plate of brittle and some hot apple cider for goblins and ghouls who want to stop in and visit. Now about the Strawberry Divinity (I know you have been thinking — “what the heck?”). It is a tasty, creamy divinity using flavored gelatin as the secret ingredient. So pick your flavor and get cooking! I’m choosing orange gelatin for my Halloween divinity. Won’t that look deliciously spooky with the orange candy pieces in a spider-print cellophane bag for treats?
With Thanksgiving ahead and some menu planning required, you will certainly want to add cupcakes to your entertaining list. Cupcakes is a collection of recipes, all starting with a cake mix! But, these aren’t just a plain cake mix — they have special ingredients to enhance the flavor. In addition, you have a choice of three different icing recipes to pipe, spread, or drizzle on your cupcakes. My favorite Fall cupcakes are Gingerbread with Cream Cheese Frosting topped with a piece of orange slice candy! Believe me, the Official Taster is very partial to the Spicy Carrot Cupcakes with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting. These are moist and tasty with shredded carrots, sweetened coconut, and toasted walnuts with more walnuts and coconut on top of the yummy creamy maple frosting. You can’t go wrong with either of these!
As you may know, I am a cookie junkie and there is no way for me to pick a favorite from the new collection of recipes in Cookies! The decorated Santa Cookies would be a tasty way to sweeten up your Christmas party. These butter cookies are cut into star shapes, baked, and decorated with fluffy red and white icing for a very cute presentation. Other cookies include traditional family choices like Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies, Mom’s Sugar Cookies, and crunchy Pecan Crispies.
We just made it lots easier to look up easy cooking reminders and to keep your favorite sweet recipes at hand!
Just leave a comment at the end of this post before next Wednesday, October 3, and you might win all four of our cooking pocket guides!
